Why Portable Hot Tubs Are Better Than In-Ground Hot Tubs

Thursday, February 28th, 2019

By Laura Varnon, Marketing Coordinator

There are a variety of choices to make when it comes to getting a hot tub.

What we’re going to discuss today is why a portable hot tub is better than an in-ground or semi in-ground hot tub.

At The Spa and Sauna Company, we recommend keeping your portable hot tub portable, as it was intended. Let us explain why.

Reason 1: In-ground or semi in-ground hot tubs add a lot to construction costs

The hot tubs available from The Spa and Sauna Company are designed to be placed on a concrete pad. While you could sink them into the ground, that would require another contractor to dig a hole and possibly build a structure to surround your hot tub.

If your hot tub is placed in-ground or semi in-ground, you would require excavation, ground reinforcement, and a French drain or sump pump. That would add time and cost, and additional vendors. None of those things are necessary for hot tub enjoyment.

Plus, have you seen the cabinets on our hot tubs? They are designed to be aesthetically pleasing and functional. Why would you want to cover that up?

Reason 2: In-ground and semi in-ground hot tubs are harder to get in to

With a typical above-ground portable hot tub, you step up on a couple of steps and then into your hot tub, usually to a shelf that is about the same height as the highest step.

With a in-ground or semi in-ground hot tub, you step down into your hot tub from higher up, which means it’s a little awkward to get in your hot tub. It also increases the chances that you might slip.

It also harder to remove the cover on an in-ground or semi in-ground hot tub, because you can’t rely on the assistance of a mechanical cover lifter that pairs so nicely with a portable hot tub.

A hot tub that is harder to open and get into gets used less than one that is easy to access.

At The Spa and Sauna Company, we want to make sure you get as much use and enjoyment from your investment as possible.

Reason 3: Safety

When a hot tub is flush with the ground, you have to take extra precautions to make sure no children, pets, or inattentive adults, inadvertently step into your open hot tub.

That’s a lot less of a concern, when your hot tub is several feet above ground-level.

Reason 4: Energy Efficiency

The ground temperatures in Nevada are a lot colder than the temperature outside. That works to your disadvantage with an in-ground hot tub.

Although the temperature outside can swing by about 30 degrees from day to night, the ground temperature does not experience those variations. It just stays colder. That means the ground around an in-ground hot tub holds in the cold (not the heat) which works against your goal of keeping your hot tub hot.

You’ll end up paying more in electricity costs to keep an in-ground or semi in-ground hot tub heated.

Above-ground portable hot tubs work with the temperature and the sun exposure to reduce you energy costs.

Reason 5: In-ground or semi in-ground hot tubs are harder to access for electrical hook up

Installation is more complex. Your electrician will need access to run the wires to your hot tub. If the access area is underground it will be harder to get to. If you decide to build a structure around your hot tub, please make sure you can access the control panel and electrical hook up.

Reason 6: In-ground and semi in-ground hot tubs are harder to access for routine maintenance, routine cleaning, and service

There are times when you will need to open up your hot tub’s doors to the equipment compartment, either for routine maintenance or service. If that door is underground or even partly underground, that becomes much harder to do.

A well maintained hot tub is a hot tub that gets used more often.

Reason 7: Moving your hot tub

Should you move or decide to relocate your hot tub, The Spa and Sauna Company can help you. If you’ve submerged your hot tub, you now have a hole in your yard to fill and possible a structure to remove too.

We hope the reasons above have helped you decide if an in-ground, semi in-ground, or portable spa is right for you.

All About Circ Pumps

Thursday, February 7th, 2019

By Laura Varnon, Marketing Coordinator

What is a Circ Pump or Circulation Pump? Do I need a Circ Pump? Why? What makes a Circ Pump essential for a quality hot tub?

In the blog below, we hope we can answer all of your questions about Circ Pumps.

What is a Circ Pump?

A Circ Pump is a low-flow pump that comes standard on most hot tubs carried by The Spa and Sauna Co. A Circ Pump keeps the water in a hot tub circulating at all times. This is done so the water inside the hot tub is being filtered, heated, and treated with sanitizer 24/7.

Do I need a Circ Pump? Why?

A Circ Pump is used to enhance your hot tub experience.

Since hot tub water is only changed about every 4 months, Circ Pumps are used to keep water fresher and cleaner for a long period of time.

The Circ Pump ensures that your water is moving and clean.

While you can still purchase a hot tub without a Circ Pump, our hot tub experts at The Spa and Sauna Company recommend that you purchase a hot tub with some sort of filtration system.

Hot Tubs without a Circ Pump often use a two-speed pump. The pump is on low-speed when circulating the water and on high-speed when running the jets.

Just like switching a light on and off often burns out an incandescent light bulb faster than leaving it on all day does, constantly changing the pump speed of a two-speed pump wears out the motor in the hot tub faster than using constant filtration provided by a Circ Pump.

If replacement and maintenance costs are a concern to you, you may be better off making a slightly larger up-front investment, in exchange for less repairs and replacement costs down the line, as well as a superior hot tub experience.

What makes a Circ Pump essential for a quality hot tub?

Would you like your water to be refreshed, filtered and heated, while you are in your hot tub? Without a Circ Pump, you need to alternate between those functions.

It comes down to what is more important to you. A hot tub with a Circ Pump has an easier time maintaining the temperature you’ve selected. That’s because while you are in the hot tub, the water circulates past the heater, and fresh, sanitized, heated waster comes out of the jets, while you use your tub.

With a two-pump system, you have to decide between heated water or moving jets.

Most people have a more enjoyable spa experience, when they can have both at the same time.

Here, at The Spa and Sauna Company, it is our goal to provide you with the most enjoyable hot tub experience, at a budget that suits your needs.

Circ Pump Hot Tub models we carry start at $6,999 and go up from there. They are typically available in the Caldera Paradise and Utopia Series; the Hot Spring Limelight, Highlife and Highlife NXT series; and the Sundance 780, 880 and 980 Series, depending on which showroom you visit.

Former Owner Receives Award

Thursday, January 31st, 2019

By Laura Varnon, Marketing Coordinator

The former owner of Hot Spring Spas of Santa Cruz and San Jose was honored earlier this month at the Hot Spring Spas annual dealer conference with a lifetime achievement award.

Patrick Carstens, who started Hot Spring Spas of Santa Cruz and San Jose in 1976, was inducted into the Hot Spring Spas Ring of Honor. The award is given to him for his lifetime of work supporting the Hot Spring Spas brand and the hot tub industry.

“We are thrilled that Patrick was recognized by Watkins Wellness for his life’s work and contribution to the Hot Spring Spas Hot Tub community,” said Scott Clark, owner of The Spa and Sauna Company, which acquired Hot Spring Spas of Santa Cruz and San Jose upon Carstens’ retirement at the beginning of 2019. “We certainly appreciate all that Patrick and his V.P. Lynda Sisk have done for Hot Spring Spas and the Santa Cruz and San Jose communities. We look forward to preserving and continuing their legacy.”

Hot Spring Spas of Santa Cruz and Hot Spring Spas of San Jose were started by Carstens and a previous partner in 1976. They were joined by Sisk in 1979. Carstens and Sisk have served the community for decades and introduced thousands of people in those communities to the hot tub lifestyle.

A few years ago, Watkins Wellness began doing something different to show special recognition to certain individuals that have committed themselves and their livelihood to our industry and brand, explained Cori Ritter, the Manager of Retail Marketing at Watkins Wellness, which manufactures Hot Spring Spas. In those instances, the individual is inducted and forever memorialized as a hero and one of the “greatest” in the franchise’s history. The award is awarded to an individual, not a company. And the recipients are inducted for a career and a lifetime of achievement and contributions to the success of the Hot Spring brand.

George Dahlheimer, of Hot Spring Spas of Dayton, Ohio, was also Inducted to the Ring of Honor this year.

Recipients of the award are evaluated on character traits, including:

  • Passion
  • Enthusiasm
  • Competitive Spirit
  • Willingness to be a Team Player

Here is the Statement from Watkins Wellness about Carstens and Sisk:

“[He’s] An ambassador of hot water wellness. He’s the real deal … a walking, talking legend, known for his passion and knowledge of our industry, and for embracing and promoting the myriad of benefits of hot tubbing.”

“He opened his doors in 1976, and became a Hot Spring Spas dealer in 1979. In fact, one of Watkins’ founders, OT Neal, originally signed him, and he’s represented our brand exclusively for 40 years, since we are now in 2019!”

“This is a person of genuine warmth and kindness. He’s also a highly celebrated leader in our network, earning three Multiple Store Productivity awards, the Scott Smith Service Excellence Award, and the Locksin Thompson Award. This is a person who is known for “doing the right thing.” An icon in our industry, this person is recognized for extensive knowledge and expertise not only on the benefits of hot tubbing, but he has extensive product knowledge. In fact, his expertise in customer service has helped Watkins throughout the years and his feedback has been invaluable. This person is also a smart leader, because of the pick he made to have [Lynda Sisk] help with marketing and sales more than 30 years ago, and he has trusted her ever since to do what she does best!”

We, at The Spa and Sauna Company, are truly grateful to Patrick and Lynda for all they have done for the Hot Spring Brand and the hot tub industry.

How Do I Find A Hot Tub Electrician?

Thursday, January 24th, 2019

By Laura Varnon, Marketing Coordinator

Here at The Spa and Sauna Company, we specialize in selling and maintaining hot tubs.

We will deliver your hot tub, but we do not hook up your hot tub to an electrical source.

As a courtesy, we will help you find an electrician, or a crane operator, or a concrete contractor, if you need one.

Electrician

After being in business for nearly 30 years, we have delivered our share of hot tubs.

Most customers only require an electrician. Some customers need a concrete pad poured still. The occasional hot tub delivery, and most swim spa deliveries, require a crane.

Regardless of what you need, we are here to help. We want your hot tub or swim spa delivery to be as relaxing as possible.

For that reason, we have compiled a referral list of electricians, concrete contractors, and crane operators that we have worked with previously. Those that we feel are the best are on our referral list.

Should you need help finding an electrician, crane operator, or concrete contractor for your hot tub or swim spa installation, we will gladly share our list of vendors with you.

All you need to do is call our Customer Engagement Representative, Delivery Supervisor, or your Salesperson, and ask for the list.

Here are a few helpful hints. Have your electrical box installed prior to the delivery. Your electrician doesn’t need to be present for the delivery. Ask them to come back after the hot tub or swim spa has been filled to do the final connection.

We hope this has helped make getting your new hot tub a bit easier.

What is the Perfect Hot Tub?

Thursday, January 17th, 2019

By Laura Varnon, Marketing Coordinator

What is the perfect hot tub? Well, the answer is different for everyone and depends on quite a few factors. In fact, the BETTER question is, what is the perfect hot tub for YOU?

We have a short quiz, developed by our team of Hot Tub Experts, that can help our team of professionals get you in YOUR Perfect Hot Tub!

Height

How tall is the tallest person in your family?

Hot Tubs come in a variety of heights. Some are more comfortable for very tall people, while others are more comfortable for people under 6 feet tall.

While the best way to tell what is most comfortable for you is to actually get in a hot tub you are considering, the height of your tallest family members will help us pinpoint some hot tub models to start with.

Health Concerns

Does anyone who will be using the hot tub have Insomnia, Back Pain, Arthritis, or Sports Injuries?

Certain hot tubs have specialized jets designed specifically for certain areas of the body. Knowing what your biggest health concern is will help us determine if you would like hot tub circuit therapy or other special hot tub features related to jet placement and strength.

Number of People Who Will Use The Hot Tub

Is the hot tub just for you? For you and your partner? For you and a large family or all of your friends?

This question is so obvious, but it’s crucial to narrowing down your choices to what will fit your needs best.

Our hot tubs can accommodate 1 to 8 people. The choice of how many people you want in there is completely up to you!

Budget

This also helps us narrow down your choices significantly and direct you to a hot tub in your desired price range. New hot tubs are available starting at about $2,999.

Here are your choices:

Most Affordable or Used ($2,999 – $4,999)

Value on a Budget ($5,000 – $9.999)

Most Popular ($9,000 – $12,499)

With Bells & Whistles ($12,500 +)

Special Features

Finally, are you looking for any special features? Most hot tubs come with some lighting options, some have music available, and others have Salt Water Systems. Do any of those interest you?

The Spa and Sauna Co. is proud to announce that it has added two showrooms to The Spa and Sauna Family.

Hot Spring Spas of Santa Cruz and Hot Spring Spas of San Jose, both previously operated by Patrick Carstens and his V.P. Lynda Sisk, are now owned and operated by The Spa and Sauna Co., led by Company Owners Scott Clark and Shelley Ingram-Clark.

The Hot Spring Spas of Santa Cruz and San Jose showrooms have a 40-plus year history in the Santa Cruz and San Jose, California markets and are known as the industry leaders in the areas they serve. They specialize in Hot Spring Spas and Endless Pools, as well as Covana Covers for Endless Pools, and will soon add Big Green Egg Barbecues and Finnleo Saunas to the mix.

All of these products are well-known by The Spa and Sauna Company, as their Nevada showrooms have been carrying them for many years.

“We are so glad to bring Hot Spring Spas of Santa Cruz and San Jose into The Spa and Sauna Co. family,” said new owner Scott Clark. “When I first started selling hot tubs, over 30 years ago, I was working in Greater Bay Area and we started our business in San Jose, in 1990, so this has really come full circle.”

While their core products, Hot Springs Spas, Fantasy Spas and Endless Pools, will remain unchanged, Clark is excited to bring The Spa and Sauna Co. marketing and management techniques to the California-based Hot Tub showrooms.

“We are pleased to let you know that we will continue to offer the same great products, and sell and service the same great products. Best of all, the entire team at Hot Spring Spas of Santa Cruz and San Jose has been retained and is poised to grow,” said Clark.

“After 43 years of being in this incredible industry, we have realized it’s time to retire! Patrick and I will miss our wonderful staff, the many industry companions we have made and mostly our customers,” said V.P./General Manager Lynda Sisk as a farewell on their Google My Business page, just before the sale was finalized. “Thank you for making this such an enjoyable business and for all of your support. We have sold the business to another Hot Spring dealer who has been in the industry since 1990 and will continue to provide you with the quality service and products you have come to expect. Happy Hot tubbing!”

The Spa and Sauna Company now includes 5 showrooms, each offering a unique shopping experience:
