Hot Tub Donated to Local Veteran

Thursday, June 16th, 2022

By Laura Varnon, Special Projects Manager

The Spa and Sauna Company, spa manufacturer Sundance Spas, and the charity Wish for Our Heroes teamed up to award a local veteran, Trent Robbins, a free Sundance Spa as a thank you for his military service.

Trent, who lives in Sparks with his wife and their three children, is a Purple Heart recipient who served in the Marines as a machine gunner between 2004 and 2008. He received his Purple Heart in 2006 after he was shot in the neck during his second overseas tour, in Iraq, all before he turned 21 years old.

He recovered and continued serving the remainder of his tour, but his four years of service as a machine gunner damaged his knees. He’s looking forward to the pain relief provided by hot tub hydrotherapy, as well as more family time.

About The Hot Tub Donation Program

This is the fourth time since 2018 that The Spa and Sauna Co., Sundance Spas, and Wish for Our Heroes have worked together to award a local veteran a free hot tub.

“We’re honored to be able to give back to our community in this way,” said Company owner Scott Clark.  “Helping veterans is a cause that is close to us personally at The Spa and Sauna Co., as we have team members who have either served or who have family members in the military. We thank Trent for his service and we wish him and his family many years of enjoyment in their new hot tub!”

Nationally, Sundance Spas, Wish for Our Heroes and spa dealers around the country have donated 77 hot tubs to veterans, since they began collaborating.

Wish for Our Heroes is “a national 501(c)(3), dedicated to providing resources to the “average” active-duty military member, in order to make their deployments a little easier, and to improve the quality of their family lives while home or during deployment,” according to their website.

Hot Tub Donation Day

Trent, now 36, was awarded a Sundance Hamilton 780 Spa. From their new hot tub, Trent and his family will be able to view Mt. Rose and an American Flag and Flag of the United Sates Marine Corps.

The Robbins Family have a newer home and are currently renovating their backyard. One day, Amanda googled Hot Tubs in Reno and found The Spa and Sauna Co. website and learned about the donation and nominated Trent.

Not long after, Trent received a call saying he had been selected as this year’s recipient.

“We were very excited when we got the news,” Trent said, explaining how he initially didn’t even pick up the phone call and how surprised he, his wife, and their three children, Logan, Karlee and Brylee, were when they found out about the donation.

That excitement carried over through the delivery day, as he and his wife and children watched the hot tub being delivered into their yard.

“We’re excited,” Trent said. “Still in shock, I think.”

About the Recipient

Trent and Amanda were high school sweethearts and when Trent signed up to enroll in the Marines, he joined the Delayed Entry Program, since he was still in high school. He left for boot camp one week after graduating from high school.

In her nomination, Amanda wrote: “Trent receives disability for his knees. He served two tours oversees as a machine gunner which caused him to have to carry his weapon, ammo, and gear on foot through villages and up and down mountains for days, weeks, and months during his time in Iraq and Afghanistan. Carrying such heavy equipment for so long wore down the cartilage in his knees, which has caused him chronic knee and back pain. A hot tub could help Trent to be able to relax his muscles, allowing him to have less pain and be able to do more with his kids.”

He was deployed in Afghanistan from 2005 – 2006 and in Iraq from 2006 – 2007. The couple married between his two deployments.

Back in the mid-2000s communication with members of the military was still quite difficult.

“I would go months without talking to him,” Amanda recalled.

The couple had their children after Trent completed his service.

Trent, who works at Western Nevada Supply, gives back to the local community by coaching the Spanish Springs youth wrestling program. His son is a member of the team.

Recently, The Spa and Sauna Co. checked in with two previous Wish for Our Heroes recipients, Daniel Rogers of Reno and Kevin Vogt of Sparks. Both said that having a hot tub has been life changing, providing muscle relaxation, stress relief and opportunities to connect with their children and relax after a long day.

“It’s a lot of extra time with the family which is what I was really looking forward to,” said Kevin, who received his donation in 2019 and is now retired from the military after 20 years of service.

We wish the Robbins family many years of happy hot tubbing in their new Sundance Spa!

A Bit of History

The Spa and Sauna Company has roots going back to 1990 when Company Owner Scott Clark opened his first store, South Bay Spa and Sauna in San Jose. CA. After marrying Shelley Ingram-Clark in 2000, the company moved to Reno. NV in 2002 as The Spa and Sauna Shop.

But the hot tub story for the Ingram-Clark family goes back even further, to 1976, when Shelley’s father David Ingram, started building what has become one of the Leading Brands of Portable Spas manufactured today – Caldera Spas.

Fast track to 2013 and a second Reno store opened, Reno Hot Spring Spas and Billiards. In 2015, a third Reno store was added – The Spa and Sauna Co. or The Spa and Billiards Shop. In 2017, that original store location became a warehouse and The Spa and Sauna Shop moved to Sparks. In 2019, 2 stores in San Jose and Santa Cruz were acquired, Hot Spring Spas of Santa Cruz and San Jose. Those stores had a history in the community that dates back to 1976, even using the name Pacific Water Works for a time, before becoming Hot Spring Spas of Santa Cruz and San Jose.  In 2020, a store that had been closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic was relocated and allowed us to double the size of our Reno flagship location at 9748 S. Virginia St. In Reno. In 2021, The Spa and Sauna Co. – Carson City opened.

You can check out all the information about all of our stores hereAnd if you’re interested in the complete history of The Spa and Sauna Co. and all hot tubs, check out our blog here

Now with six stores in two states, and a variety of hot tub and swim spa brands to choose from, it became clear it was time to unify our branding and our message at all of our current, and all of our potential future, locations. Moving forward all of our locations will be The Spa and Sauna Co.

We also support local veterans, and since 2018 have donated 3 hot tubs to deserving local veterans in Reno and Sparks, in conjunction with a spa manufacturer and the charity Wish for Our Heroes. We are currently searching for our next recipients. Read more and even nominate a deserving veteran, or yourself, hereOur first recipient once told us this program seemed too good to be true, but it isn’t. We love giving back to our community and supporting our local community.

We recently checked in with our first 2 Hot Tub for Heroes recipients, Daniel Rogers of Reno and Kevin Vogt of Sparks. They were awarded hot tubs in 2018 and 2019.

Both said they are still enjoying their hot tubs after all these years, and enjoy working with a company that gives back to its community.

Speaking of the donation process, Kevin said “The process from start to finish was super easy. I mean, you guys set everything up. You came, you did all of it. Any questions I had, there’s always been someone there to answer it for me. New hot tub owner, myself, there’s a lot I didn’t know and every time I ran into something I couldn’t really troubleshoot myself, I’d call you guys and I’d get an answer immediately.”

The Spa and Sauna Company looks forward to making many more donations to local veterans.

Through these efforts, we’ve built long-term lasting relationships with people in our local communities, and we appreciate every single one of them.

Moving Forward

The Spa and Sauna Co. is more than the brands we sell, and even the products we sell. The Spa and Sauna Company is part of your lives – your enhanced lives, if you will. We can’t wait to help you Enhance Your Space, Enhance Your Home and Enhance Your Life. We’ve been proud to be a part of your lives since 1990 and are looking forward to a great future together!

Hot Tubs and Water Restrictions: Can I Fill My Hot Tub When There Are Local Water Restrictions?

Tuesday, December 21st, 2021

Periodically, local governments in areas where we sell hot tubs, place water restrictions on residents.

While we understand that people are concerned about potential financial implications of water use penalties – and to want to use water responsibly – we want to assure you that using, filling or refilling, or draining and cleaning your hot tub water isn’t anything to be concerned about during this time. It is also still safe to purchase a new hot tub or swim spa that would need to be filled with water.

Right now, San Jose Water District has implemented their “Stage 3” water restrictions due to drought conditions. They are implementing water rationing and a list of potable water use restrictions. Thankfully, filling new hot tubs and swim spas is not on the list at this time.

The benefit of caring for and using your hot tub properly far outweighs any financial penalties that water districts might impose. Also, all of the hot tubs and swim spas we sell are highly energy efficient and most can function with the same water for a minimum of four months and up to a full year, with proper care. Hot Spring Spas and their FreshWater Salt System, specifically, have been designed with water conservation in mind. Read more about how Hot Spring Spas and their water-saving products here.

Not to mention, that the maximum penalty for filling a large hot tub would be about $5 in San Jose, if you happen to exceeded your water ration.

Feedback We Ae Hearing about Water Concerns

One of our sales team members told us we do have customers who incorrectly believe it is illegal to fill a new pool or hot tub due to the restrictions that were implemented in the last drought. We want to assure you that isn’t the case. However, restrictions do change from time to time, and always vary from region to region, so be sure to check with your local water district.

You can read the latest restrictions in San Jose here.

It’s true – the rations may affect some of our customers. However, the penalties aren’t near as bad as most people think. Recently, we have customers deciding not to drain and refill 2 year old spa water because of water penalties. They feared that it might be very, very expensive. And while you can go a long time without changing your hot tub water, two years is too long. Read more about how often you should change your hot tub water here.

However, even if these customers exceeded their water ration, the penalty would be modest, from $5 for the largest hot tub we sell to $30 for the largest swim spa we sell.

In San Jose, they are charging a “penalty rate” per “unit” of water that is used in excess of your allotted ration. The ration is based on previous water use (around 14 units per month for an average household). A unit of water is 748 gallons and the penalty rate is $7.13. Regular rates in San Jose vary, but are less than that amount, depending on how much water you use in your household.

This means in a WORST CASE scenario, if filling your spa even puts you over your limit, it would cost less than $5 to fill a Hot Spring Grandee. With a capacity of 450 gallons of water, a Grandee is one of the largest hot tubs we sell.

The penalties have caused so much concern, that we had a customer recently ask if it would be cheaper to truck water in to fill her new swim spa. We can guarantee you it would not be. This customer was concerned about an Endless Pool R200, a compact swim spa, that’s 12 feet long and contains 1,335 gallons of water. What we want people to understand, is that filling both sides of an Endless Pool E2000, which is 20 feet long, under the penalty rate would cost about $30. The E2000 is the largest swim spa we sell. It uses up to 2,395 gallons of water depending on features selected.

Customers who already have a hot tub and need service that requires draining their hot tub can also rest assured that, even if there was an overage, it would be a very small charge.

Overall, the amount of water used to fill a spa or even a swim spa, is a tiny percentage of overall household water consumption.

In Summary

While it is wonderful to be aware of how much water you are using, hot tubs and swim spas are not big culprits of wasting water, due to the length of time they can reuse the same water as a result of thoughtful construction and water care systems.

Also, we have found that historically, people have used less water during drought conditions, even with a hot tub in their yard. So, take a shorter shower, and a longer hot tub soak! Bonus: You’ll be more relaxed, and hopefully, a bit less concerned about your water bill, too.

Unique Showroom Feature – An Antique Model T Ford

One of the most unique decorative features of this beautiful showroom is the antique 1914 Model T Ford you’ll see as you explore the showroom. Originally owned by the company co-owner’s grandfather, Mike Georgelis from Poway, CA, this museum-quality piece was never driven by the family, but was restored as a hobby. This unique piece has had a bit of a journey before finding its new home at 3355 S. Carson St. When it was first gifted to company co-owners Scott and Shelley Clark about 5 years ago, it lived in their home garage, then at a hot tub warehouse in Reno, before finding its spot at The Spa and Sauna Co. – Carson City.

Nevada, and Reno specifically, is known for its car enthusiasts, whether it’s the National Automobile Museum, where you might see some similar Ford Model Ts on display, or Hot August Nights, where you can watch other antique cars roll downtown.

Be sure to take a look next time you’re visiting!
