Hot Tubs Make a Great Gift

Tuesday, November 6th, 2018

By Laura Varnon, Marketing Coordinator

A hot tub from The Spa and Sauna Company makes a great holiday gift (or a gift for any time of year, for that matter)! Many of our customers come in before holidays or special occasions, like milestone birthdays or anniversaries, to purchase a hot tub as a special gift.

Let’s explore some reasons:

  1. Provides year-round enjoyment
A portable spa can be used all year, especially in the Reno-Tahoe area, where the mornings and nights are so much colder than the peak temperatures of the day. Soaking in hot water is a wonderful way to invigorate before your day or relax before bedtime any time of the year.
  2. Will last for years and years
Today’s hot tubs are designed to last for many, many years, with proper care and maintenance. We’ve met some people who have their spas for over a decade, before trading in for a newer model, of course.
  3. Provides a place for quality time with friends, family and loved ones
Nothing says you care more than a hot tub designed for distraction-free time together. Hot tubs are great for reconnecting without the constant buzz of smartphones or other devices.
  4. Adds lasting value to your home/property
Hot tubs are an asset to your property value, when well maintained. If you should decide to move, who wouldn’t want a home that comes with a hot tub. And since hot tubs are portable, if you’re moving locally, you could always take it with you, too. The Spa and Sauna Company relocates hot tubs too.
  5. Relieves muscle aches and pains
Hot tubs are therapeutic. Just 20 minutes a day can relieve chronic pain or sore muscles. We’ve had hot tubbers tell us they no longer need chiropractors for their back pain, after they started using a hot tub regularly.
  6. Relaxation any time
A hot tub at your own home provides instant access to relaxation. All you need to do is lift the cover and get in!
  7. Improves sleep
A 20-minute soak before bed can improve the quality of your sleep, resulting in fewer wakes during the sleep cycle and higher quality sleep.
  8. Improves overall health
Hot tub time can improve overall health, by fostering a more positive outlook on life.
  9. They’re just so much fun
Have you ever been in a hot tub before? The jets, the water, the heat, the company, water toys. It all makes for a really good time.
  10. It’s a gift that shows you care
The gift of a hot tub shows you care! Who wouldn’t be touched knowing the gift giver wanted to improve their health, share quality time, and all of the other great benefits discussed above.
  11. It would make a wonderful surprise
Surprise! Holiday gifts can get so mundane sometimes. You’ll never have to worry about getting stuck in the rut of giving your significant other a hot tub every year. And we promise, this will be a gift he or she will never forget.
  12. It’s a gift that improves quality of life
Health benefits, relationship benefits, home value benefits, entertainment benefits. The list just goes on and on.
If you’re considering a hot tub as a gift this year, we encourage you to come down to one of our showrooms right away! We have over 100 hot tubs in stock, but ordering hot tubs from the manufacturer and getting on the delivery schedule, can take some time. Click Here to browse models.

Are Spas and Hot Tubs Chemical Free?

Thursday, October 25th, 2018

By Laura Varnon, Marketing Coordinator

Spas and Hot Tubs require proper Water Care. So, are spas and hot tubs chemical free? In a word, no. Although some hot tub and spa dealers will try to convince you that your hot tub doesn’t need water care or chemicals to function, water care is essential to maintaining a healthy environment in your hot tub.

At The Spa and Sauna Company, we are proud to offer a variety of water care options that are suitable for your individual needs. All of the Water Care Options we offer here will kill germs and bacteria, so the best choice is the one that makes the most sense to you, either for your budget or your skin sensitivity.

We also offer free water testing services at all 3 of our locations, so you can have a Water Care Professional check that the chemicals in your hot tub are at the proper levels. Just bring a sample of your hot tub water in a clean container to any of The Spa and Sauna Company’s locations. If your chemicals aren’t at their optimal levels, we are here to offer advice and products to help you adjust them.

The hot tub you purchase will determine in part the water care you choose OR if water care is an important consideration for you, the water care choice you make will determine which hot tub you buy.

At The Spa and Sauna Company we offer 4 brands of hot tubs, Hot Spring, Sundance, Caldera and Freeflow. Each has different options for water care.

We also use SpaGuard Water Care Products to supplement those systems. This includes items such as Shock Oxidizer and Enhanced Shock, one of which will be required for your hot tub cleaning needs. As a starting point for water care, minerals should be used on all hot tubs and work in conjunction with other sanitizers.

SpaGuard Enhanced Shock is a combination of oxidizer, sanitizer, and water clarifier. This unique water care item is exclusively carried by The Spa and Sauna Company in the Reno area.

Hot Spring

Let’s start with Hot Spring which has a Salt Water System available, which provides a lower chemical, more natural soaking experience.

Hot Spring Spas in the NXT, Highlife and Hot Spring Collection are available with the ACE Salt Water System. The ACE salt water system creates active oxygen with ACE diamond electrode technology. That active oxygen combines with salt to create chlorine. The ACE system requires less hands-on time to manage your water care. It also is environmentally friendly and offers softer, cleaner water. With this system, we recommend using 1 TBSP of SpaGuard Enhanced Shock per person, upon exiting.

As an alternative to the ACE system, owners of a Hot Spring Spas with an Ozone System can choose the EverFresh system, which reduces the amount of chlorine that needs to be added. It also includes minerals that make the water softer. With this system, we recommend using 1 TBSP of SpaGuard Enhanced Shock for each person in the hot tub, upon exiting.

Hot Spring Spas without an ozone system can use SpaGuard Water Care and Freshwater AG Plus Silver Cartridges. This is a more manual system for hot tub cleaning. SpaGuard Products can be used to sanitize your hot tub, reduce stains, clarify your water, test your water and sanitize your water.

Sundance Spas

Sundance Spas can use the SunPurity Silver Cartridge. This cartridge disinfects, prevents algae and clarifies water. Using this more natural option will reduce the amount of chemicals you need. All Sundance Spas are equipped with “ClearRay,” a UVC (Ultraviolet) Sanitation System. UVC light wavelengths are used for sanitizing water. Upon exiting the hot tub, you will want to add 1 TBSP of Enhanced Shock per person for sanitizing purposes.

Caldera Spas

For Caldera Spas, we recommend using the @Ease In-Line SmartChlor cartridges which lasts at least a month. The mineral cartridge lasts 4 months. When used with the Monarch® CD Ozone System, it provides Caldera’s most effective water care system. This system doesn’t over-chlorinate the water or use excess product. It also prevents pH from fluctuating, meaning less dry itchy skin and less wear and tear on your spa’s covers and pillows.

With this system, you shock your hot tub monthly, instead of after every use. You will use SpaGuard Shock Oxidizer once a month. Never use Enhanced Shock with this water care system.

Freeflow Spas

Freeflow Spas are a more basic spa, that doesn’t offer ozone or salt water systems. Freeflow Spas from The Spa and Sauna Company come with an @Ease Floating System. The ball floats inside your hot tub. It uses SmartChlor Technology to reduce the amount of chlorine and the amount of Shock Oxidizer needed. When the SmartChlor runs out, the ball flips the other side to alert you. With this system, you only need to use Shock Oxidizer once a month.

Other Options

Additional systems are available if the options listed above do not fit your needs.

Routine Maintenance On Every Spa Brand

All systems require shocking the hot tub (either after every use or monthly, depending on the water care system), testing the water balance weekly and cleaning your filters monthly. You will also want to drain and clean your hot tub 3 times a year. Yearly, you should purge the hot tub plumbing lines to get rid of buildup. It’s not too complicated once you find a routine that works for you.

By maintaining your spa with a small amount of chemicals, you can enjoy a healthy, clean, hot tub experience for many years to come.

Top 5 Reasons Not to Buy from a Traveling Spa Show

Top 5 Reasons Not to Buy from a Traveling Spa Show

By Laura Varnon, Marketing Coordinator

If you are shopping for a hot tub, you might want to consider the top 5 reasons not to buy from a traveling hot tub show. We are basing these reasons on comments we have heard directly from customers of a traveling spa show, who later came to us for service or water care products.

  1. Quality – Are the hot tubs high-quality? Have you read any reviews of the product? We recommend you do this when you are shopping for any hot tub, regardless of where you purchase it.

  2. The hot tub may look great at the show. It has a cover, cover lifter and steps. But when it gets to your house, it’s the spa only. And it was dropped off in your driveway.

For this reason, if you do decide to buy from a traveling show, you must get everything in writing, even if it is promised to you verbally. If you expect to have your hot tub delivered to your backyard, make sure it is written in the contract. Otherwise, you will have a several hundred pound item to move before you can park your car. If the contract doesn’t explicitly state that you will receive a cover, cover lifter and steps, you aren’t getting them.

The Spa and Sauna Company will always deliver to your backyard. Most of our spas include delivery, a cover, a cover lifter and steps. There are some exceptions, due to the style or size of the spa. However, if you do select one of the few spas that does not include certain accessories, you can rest assured that we will make that clear to you.

  1. The salespeople at the show may allow you to believe that they have a local showroom and service department, while they actually are based far away. You will not be able to reach them for delivery questions, routine service or repair issues.

At The Spa and Sauna Company, we have 3 showrooms in Reno and Sparks. We service all of the region, including Lake Tahoe, Northern Nevada and the Northern California Mountain communities. We also have water care and service departments. We are open 7 days a week. If you happen to need assistance while our showrooms are closed, we can be reached by voicemail, email and web chat.

  1. The salespeople may reassure you that the hot tubs they are selling are chemical free and you don’t need to add anything to them. That is simply not true.

We, at The Spa and Sauna Company, know that all hot tubs require water care and routine maintenance. We have many different water care options available to suit your unique needs. We also send out instructional material via email to help you care for your hot tub.

  1. Check their reputation. While salespeople at traveling events pitch their shows as a once in a lifetime opportunity, they visit several times a year, which makes much of what they say suspect.

Here are some reviews from a traveling spa show that frequently visits the Reno area:

So far the experience is the worst!!! This place has the worst customer service I have ever seen. Good luck if you ever try and call them, you will always be forwarded to a voicemail...!!! – Sean S, Yelp Review

Do not buy anything from this company. You will regret it. – Bob M., Yelp Review

Worst company ever!!! Do not buy a spa from them. They are overpriced and salesmen are pushy.  – Emily K., Yelp Review

Do not buy a spa from these people.  They are scam artists and do not provide what they say they will!  - Izzy M., Yelp Review

In comparison, here are some of the comments from our happy customers.

The service department went above & beyond again! – Bernard G., Google Review

These guys are great. Very friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable. The delivery guys made a difficult process look easy. Quick, too. – Arthur E., Google Review

5 star service, helpful and polite. – Carolyn Rose, Google Review

Super positive experience. Everyone that we have dealt with has been super helpful and enjoyable to talk with. – Jess M., Google Review

The Spa & Sauna Company has created a wonderful experience. – Edward R., Google Review

Great service all around! We love our new spa! – Stephanie B., Google Review

Hot Tubs Incline Village, Backyard Spa Dealer Offers Low Prices

While there is no magic solution for improved health and wellness, there are strategies that can help you look and feel better instantly. One of the best is also the most enjoyable. Here’s how to restore health in minutes a day with a hot tub.

Rejuvenate Body and Mind A hot tub is a fantastic tool for giving you the physical and mental boost you need. With massaging jets pushing out tension and stress from the muscles, and a relaxed, distraction free environment to soothe the soul, five minutes is all it takes to rejuvenate body and mind for a healthier you.

Improve Cardiovascular Fitness Elevated heat causes the heart rate to increase—a response very similar to what happens when the body is engaged in light cardiovascular exercise. With regular use, the heart muscle strengthens, giving you the extra energy and vitality you need to do the things you enjoy.

Get Your Beauty Sleep No one can be their best when they are not getting the restorative sleep they need to function at peak levels. Use a hot tub 30 minutes before bed and put sleep aids away. Hot, massaging water is just what the doctor ordered for promoting a deep, restful sleep that finds you energized and ready to go in the morning.

To encourage local residents to check out the benefits of using a hot tub to help improve their overall health and well-being, The Spa and Sauna Company is providing free test soaks at all their showrooms. Soak in a Sauna to Manage Stress, Sauna Store Incline Village

Soak in a Sauna to Manage Stress, Sauna Store Incline Village

Sauna enthusiasts regularly cite stress management as one of the best advantages to ownership. If you’re interested in learning more about how a sauna can improve your life, here are three easy ways to reduce stress with an in home sauna.

A Distraction Free Space - When the daily grind takes its toll on your neck and shoulders, the sauna is a welcome retreat. Once inside, there’s no distraction from cell phones, email or TV. Sit back, relax and let soothing heat erase tension, rejuvenate and refresh body and mind.

Heat Relaxes Tight Muscles - Sustained, elevated heat—like from the sauna—is much better than a traditional heating pad. With intense heat targeting the entire body, relief is long lasting. Heat relaxes muscles, reducing stiffness and stimulating blood circulation for improved flexibility and range of motion.

Release Endorphins for Increased Positivity A few minutes of sauna bathing is enough to trigger the release of endorphins—the body’s feel good hormones. Endorphins promote happiness, triggering healthy positivity and the after sauna ‘glow’ that stays with you through the rest of your day.

To encourage local residents to check out the benefits of using a sauna to help improve their overall health and well-being, The Spa and Sauna Company is providing free tests at all their showrooms. We do recommend, however, that people wanting to schedule their free 30-minute test call us ahead of time to reserve their spot. It’s BBQ Season

Thursday, May 24th, 2018

It’s BBQ Season

By Laura Varnon, Marketing Coordinator

The weather is warming up, Memorial Day and Father’s Day are around the corner, and you know what that means…it’s BBQ time!

Here at The Spa and Sauna Company, we carry two unique types of BBQs – the Big Green Egg and Saber Grills. While the Big Green Egg is known for its unique appearance – it actually looks like a big, green egg – and its convection cooking methods, Saber Grills are more of a traditional-looking grill that features faster cooking time and quicker heating ability.

Recently, our Operations Manager Joe Lake hosted a BBQ for our entire team, using a Large Big Green Egg to cook up two 16-pound turkeys and a Saber Grill to cook up two tenderloins. The result was a delicious lunch, enjoyed by all the members of our team at all three locations.

The Big Green Egg is a ceramic cooker that uses natural charcoal and is known for quality heat retention, which helps food cooked inside of it retain moisture. It can be used to grill, roast, bake, smoke and cook at low and slow temperatures. It can cook anything from cookies, to bone-in meats, to rice pilaf. The Big Green Egg comes packaged with everything you will need to start cooking. On most models, that includes a nest, EGG Mates, premium natural charcoal, an ash tool, and an instant fire starter.

The Saber Grill is a stainless steel and uses propane, typically requiring 30% less gas than similarly styled grills. It cooks using Infrared technology and is known to heat in as little 10 minutes. It is designed so that grease drips off but does not cause flare-ups. It is also known for even heat distribution. Due to the multiple heating areas available on the main grill and the side burner, you can cook foods that require different heat at the same time.

Both the Big Green Egg and Saber Grills are only available from certified dealers, such as The Spa and Sauna Company. We have models on display at our three local showrooms, and if the model you are looking for is not on display, we can order it for you.

If you’d like to see the Big Green Egg in action, we will have a Big Green Egg EGGspert here this Saturday, May 26, 2018 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. cooking up samples for our guests at or Memorial Day Parking Lot Sale, which is our biggest sale of the year.

For more information about the BBQs offered at The Spa and Sauna Company, please visit https://spaandsauna.com/bbq-grills.

Local Veteran Awarded Free Hot Tub as a Thank You for His Service!

By Laura Varnon, Marketing Coordinator

The Spa and Sauna Co., spa manufacturer Sundance Spas, and the charity Wish for Our Heroes have teamed up to award a local veteran, Daniel Rogers, a free Sundance spa as a small thank you for his military service.

Daniel, a 30-year-old husband and father of two, is a 9-year member of the Nevada Army National Guard and has been on two year-long deployments overseas and a training mission in Haiti. During his mission in Haiti, his wife, Michelle Rogers, was pregnant with their daughter. During his first deployment, to Afghanistan, Michelle was pregnant with their son, who was born 5 days before Daniel returned home.

Wish for Our Heroes is “a national 501(c)(3), dedicated to providing resources to the “average” active-duty military member, in order to make their deployments a little easier, and to improve the quality of their family lives while home or during deployment,” according to their website.

“Sundance Spas also chose to partner up with Wish for Our Heroes because most of the donations goes to the cause. 100% of individual donations and 95% of corporate donations go directly toward granting wishes. They’re an amazing group and we couldn’t have asked for a better partner,” said James Choi, Channel Marketing Manager for Sundance Spas.

Daniel is the first veteran in Reno and Nevada to be awarded a spa through the Hot Tub for Heroes program, which is the partnership between Wish for Our Heroes and Sundance Spas. So far, together the two organizations have donated spas (or are in the middle of the donation process) with 17 veterans nationwide, according to Garrett Guinivan, Mid-Atlantic and Rocky Mountain Chapter Director for Wish for Our Heroes.

Daniel, who is a military police officer, wrote in his application essay about his second tour, which was in Kuwait, “This one was much more difficult on the wife and the children, as the kids were older and they definitely missed me terribly. I am home now spending some much-needed time with my family, but still am ever ready to answer the call when it comes.”

On the spa delivery day, Daniel and Michelle both mentioned that they had never won any contents or something of this scale before. They are truly thrilled to have a hot tub now and have been using it several times a day, either before work or for some family time.

“It’s surreal that we have a hot tub in our backyard that we won for free,” said Michelle.

Daniel, a manager at a Walmart Distribution Center, said he initially signed up for the Guard years ago because he wanted something more in life. He returned home from his most recent tour in the middle of last summer.

“I have been rather fortunate in my military career and have not suffered any major physical trauma.” Daniel wrote. “I suffer from muscle aches and pains, but nothing too terrible, as some of my brothers and sisters in arms have. For me, a spa would be beneficial for me mentally. It would be a way to relax, sooth sore muscles, and get the family together to spend more quality time, that is not distracted by other mind consuming technologies.”[node:summary]

The Spa and Sauna Co. was pleased to participate in the program.

“We, at the Spa and Sauna Co., are very proud to be able to fulfill this Hot Tub for Heroes donation, granted in conjunction with the Wish for Our Heroes foundation and Sundance Spas,” said Spa and Sauna Co. Owner Scott Clark. “We are also incredibly grateful to Daniel for his Service to our country and the sacrifices he and his family have made during his deployments. We hope that Daniel and his family are able to enjoy years of relaxation, stress relief, and family bonding time from their new Sundance Hamilton.”

Wish for our Heroes encourages giving back to the community, something which Daniel already participates in.

“I am already pretty big in trying to give back to my community. For example, I work with the local Food Bank of Northern Nevada and volunteer time there to help them process food and get it out to families in the area. What I am most excited about is to combine one of my favorite hobbies with community outreach. Snowboarding is one of my favorite things to do, and this year, I have signed myself and my kids up for the Sky Tavern Junior Ski Program. This is a non profit organization that teaches kids how to ski/snowboard. It is 100% volunteer run. This year I will be volunteering as much time as I possibly can to this program, primarily as a snowboarding instructor; however, I will also be fulfilling any role that is required of me in order to make it work up there. A spa would make for a wonderful way to rebound after long days on the mountain in the winter time!”

We wish you continued enjoyment in your new Sundance Spa, Daniel!
